Biography

Ambassador Shin-wha Lee has served as the Republic of Korea's Ambassador for International Cooperation on North Korean Human Rights since July 2022. She is currently a Political Science and International Relations Professor at Korea University, Seoul, she received her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland at College Park and held a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Harvard University. Ambassador Lee was formerly a special advisor to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s Rwandan Independent Inquiry, UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Group Member on Peacebuilding Fund, and a full-time visiting professor at SIPA, Columbia University.

Biography

Dr. Stephen Noerper is President of the Hawaii-based Asia Dialogue. He has worked on Korea issues for three decades through university, nonprofits, public service and the private sector. He has written extensively and appeared widely across national and international media.

Morse Tan

Dean, School of law liberty university

Biography

Ambassador Morse Hyung-Myung Tan served as the first Asian-American ambassador-at-large in US history. He has published more law review articles on North Korea than anyone and his book: “North Korea, International Law and the Dual Crises: Narrative and Constructive Engagement” was published by acclaimed publishers Routledge.  Ambassador Tan is currently Dean of the School of Law at Liberty University in Virginia. He previously held visiting scholar positions at the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law and the University of Texas. The Korean-American Society of Chicago honored him as Korean-American of the Year and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs selected him as an Emerging Leader. His media and speaking engagements regarding the DPRK include the National Law Journal, Voice of America, the State Department Distinguished Lecture Series and many more. Ambassador Tan was born in Seoul, South Korea and is fluent in English, Korean and Spanish. 

Greg Scarlatoiu

Executive Director of the Committee for HRNK

Biography

Greg Scarlatoiu is the Executive Director of the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (HRNK).For ten years, he has been a visiting professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and YonseiUniversity. Scarlatoiu is president of the International Council on Korean Studies (ICKS). He has been aRadio Free Asia Korean columnist for twenty years. Scarlatoiu holds a Master of Arts in Law andDiplomacy from the Fletcher School, Tufts University, and a Master of Arts and Bachelor of Arts fromSeoul National University’s Department of International Relations. He completed the MIT XXI Seminarfor U.S. national security leaders in 2016-2017. Scarlatoiu was awarded the title ‘Citizen of Honor, Cityof Seoul,’ in January 1999. Born and raised in communist Romania, he is a naturalized U.S. citizen.Scarlatoiu is fluent in Korean, French and Romanian.

Grant Newsham

President of CPAC Korea

Biography

Grant Newsham is a Senior Research Fellow with the Center for Security Policy in Washington, D.C. – particularly focusing on Asia/Pacific security, political and economic matters.  He is a retired US Marine Colonel and served as reserve head of intelligence for Marine Forces Pacific, and was the US Marine Attaché, US Embassy Tokyo on two occasions.  

Mr. Newsham lived in Tokyo for over twenty years and worked in executive roles at a Western investment bank and a major American high-tech firm.  He is also a former US Foreign Service Officer – with work covering a number of regions – including East and South Asia, and specializing in insurgency, counterinsurgency, and commercial matters.

Mr. Newsham is also an attorney with experience in international trade, public international law, and criminal law.

Julie Turner

United States Special Envoy for North Korean Human Rights

Biography

Ambassador Julie Turner was sworn in as the U.S. Special Envoy for North Korean Human Rights Issues on October 13, 2023. Ambassador Turner has worked over the past 20 years to strengthen democratic institutions and promote human rights throughout the East Asia and Pacific Region. Most recently, she served as Director in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, the Labor Office of East Asia and the Pacific U.S. Department of State. Ambassador Turner is a career civil service employee and graduated from Pepperdine University and the University of Maryland.

E Jisung

AUTHOR

Biography

E Jisung is a Seoul-born South Korean author.  In 1995 he published a book of poetry titled “Longing” under the penname ‘Lee Jihoon’ and in 1997 published another book of poetry titled, “Forever and Ever We Shall Flow as a Deep, Deep River.”  Starting from 2000, E Jisung has published numerous books on various topics such as education, the humanities, self-development, essays, and business and economics.

His major works are “The Dreaming Attic” (2007), “Lead Through Leading” (2010), “The Thinking Humanities” (2015), “Eight” (2019), and “Future Wealth” (2021).  Every book E Jisung has published have become number one best-sellers, prompting him to be called the “Best-Seller Maker.”  As of 2020, he has published 5.5 million copies of his books.

His major works have been translated and published in the United States, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, and China.  In 2015 he married Cha Yooram, a South Korean national billiards player; they have a son and daughter together.

E Jisung is active as a vice-representative of “Dreams Dream,” a non-profit that builds hospitals and schools in overseas slums and is involved in North Korean human rights with Pastor Superman, who has rescued over 4,000 North Korean refugees.  He has over 294,000 followers on YouTube and is one of the most important political/humanities writers in South Korea.
